frequently asked questions

  • May I submit more than one drawing for Anonymous Drawings during an open call?

    • No. please submit only one drawing, according to our guidelines.

  • I live around the corner and I don't what to pay for the postage. May I deliver my submission personally at the exhibition space?

    • No, please don't. The exhibition spaces are not involved with the procedure of the open call. It is very important that you ONLY use the Anonymous Drawings - P.O. Box address. You find this address in the guidelines.

  • Do the artists receive a separate confirmation of receipt?

    • No, we are sorry. Due to the high amount of submissions we are not able to handle this with our small team. You receive one email, circa 3 weeks after the submission deadline: the notification for selection results.

  • What happens if my drawing is sold in the first show? Is there any chance to submit another one for the following exhibitions?

    • Yes! If your submitted drawing will be sold in the first show in Berlin, or on one of the others we will let you know instantly. You will get the chance to send us another work for further shows.

  • Is there a participation fee?

    • No. You only need to pay 15 € for the reshipment of your works if you live abroad. For German residents we ask for a prepaid and self-addressed envelope.
    • There is an option on the submission form to mark "There is no need to return my drawing" In this case may submit without the postage and the return envelope. But please consider that this is valid even if your work has not been selected for the exhibition.

  • How many submissions do you recieve, approximately?

    • Roughly 2000, according to experience. About 600 will be selected for the exhibitions.

  • How do you fix the drawings on the exhibition walls?

    • We use removable glue pads. This always worked out pretty fine. Normally they leave no traces on the paper. And if the paper is ver thin, delicate or uncoated, we mount transparent archival-tape on the corners of the drawings before using the glue tabs. This archival tape is acid free, it is used for paper/book-restoration, too. Only thing: glue pads are not suitable to attach works on  heavy materials, such as thick cardboard or wood. These pieces - specially the bigger formats - tend to drop in the ground. Please consider that before picking the work you'd like to submit. We love paper and drawings and assure you that we handle your drawings with accurateness.

  • Who selects the drawings for the exhibitions?

    • The Berlin based artist Anke Becker . She founded the project 2006 and did the selections for the shows by herself from the very beginning. Juries with more people often tend to compromise – and that is what we want to avoid. Above all the selection for Anonymous Drawings is to be made spontaneously without spiel.

  • Why is there a preselection? Why don't you take all the submitted works for the exhibitions?

    • Because Anonymous Drawings is about showing diversity without getting lost in wild randomness.

  • Do you accept digital drawings or prints?

    • No. We only accept one-of-a-kind hand drawings. That is: Only works that cannot be reproduced by a printer or a printing press.

  • Why do I have to send in original drawings?

    • Because we believe that especially for judging drawings one absolutely needs to have a look on the original: fine lines, small details or the paper quality are not visible sufficiently on digital images. Because we want that everybody can take part: even people who have sparse internet access and no possibilities to digitize their works. We want to keep the entire process easy and down-to-earth.

  • What is your set of criteria when you do the selection for the shows?

    • What is drawing all about? A quick draft, a sophisticated work on paper, a children's drawings, concept art, figurative drawings, abstract works, a written note - all that is possible and so much more. We possibly want to show it all. We try to show a maximum variety and at the same place we want to avoid formal and qualitative randomness. We treat every drawing of the show like a single word in a text: from many single drawings emerges always a new context - according to the particular arrangement of the single pieces. But not every word fits into every text and especially not in any order. The same applies to Anonymous Drawings: We are not able to put every drawing in the overall context in a reasonable way. We pay attention to show a well-balanced mix of different styles and conceptual approaches. That is: If there are too many works of a certain style we select some exemplary ones for the exhibition.

  • Is the selection process anonymous?

    • Yes, definitely!

  • Do you accept collage or mixed media works?

    • Well... Yes. Just make sure that your work does not become too heavy or three dimensional. The main focus at the selection for the shows is not collage, mixed media or painting - but Anke always picks some significant examples to show the wide range of possibilities.

  • Is it possible to make an internship at the Anonymous Drawings Project?

    • No, we are sorry. We do not have the money to pay for an intern, and unpaid work is something we don''t like due to political reasons.
